Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is the recognized auxiliary organization that provides for the student governing body for California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona).  It is a non-profit corporation that was founded in 1963.  The organization is led by students with a mission to empower and improve student education at Cal Poly Pomona.  As stated in the By-Laws, the function of ASI is to “provide an official channel for the free exchange of ideas and opinions among the administration, faculty, and the student body of this University, and to facilitate the programming of student activities for the enrichment of social, cultural, and educational aspects of University Life.”

The student leaders at Cal Poly Pomona’s diverse multicultural campus gain leadership experience for a diverse and constantly changing world. Being a student leader gives students a chance to experience the infrastructure of governing and administrative functions within an organization.The prerequisite to apply for a student leadership opportunity is the completion of a minimum of two CPP quarters, each consisting of at least 9 units and a Cal Poly cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. The Cabinet, Treasurer, Attorney General,  Elections Chair, Chief Justice, Associate Justices and the University-wide Committee representatives, are appointed by the ASI President starting on July 1st.   The Bronco Events and Activities Team (BEAT) chairs are appointed by the Secretary of Programs in consultation with the ASI President. All ASI student leaders serve at least a one-year term.  To maintain eligibility, students must attend a minimum of two quarters, with a 2.0 GPA, during the academic year.

For Appointed Positions

PRESIDENT’S CABINET

The Cabinet members assist the ASI President and Vice President as prescribed.  The Cabinet also serves as an advisory board to the ASI Senate on fiscal and policy matters meeting regularly throughout the year.

The ASI President appoints each member of the Cabinet and their respective assistants to develop programs and/or services within their areas of responsibility. 

Secretary of External Affairs: The Secretary of External Affairs is the secondary representative to the California State Student Association (CSSA) and the United States Student Association (USSA). 

The Secretary of External Affairs is to:

1. Keep the ASI informed of any Federal and/or State legislation that affects California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and/or its student body.

2.  Coordinate with the ASI President to inform the ASI Senate of news releases and other pertinent information from the Office of the Chancellor, California State University, the Office of the University President, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and the California State Student Association, including, but not limited to, proposed and newly established state laws.

Lobby Corps Board: The Secretary of External Affairs is the Chair of the ASI Lobby Corps Board. The board will consist of a public relations coordinator, a legislative research assistant, a campus department liaison and an events/logistics coordinator.

The board’s effort shall include, but shall not be limited, to student information, outreach, awareness drives, student rallies, and/or student Congress. 

Secretary of Internal Affairs: The Secretary of Internal Affairs shall be responsible for a variety of internal campus affairs of the ASI. The Secretary of Internal Affairs will serve as liaison to, and maintain relations with, the Director of Disabled Student Services.

The Secretary of Internal Affairs is authorized to:

1.     Act as liaison to the Student Health Center and to serve on the Student Health Advisory Committee.

2.     Promote and inform the student body on current environmental and/or health issues.

3.     Represent the ASI in all phases of intercollegiate athletics and shall coordinate the efforts of the student members of the Bronco Athletic Association, and related committees.

4.     Coordinate all efforts to improve campus awareness in programs relating to on campus student affairs.

5.     Chair the ASI Inter-Council Meetings and establish relationships between ASI Councils, ASI departments and University entities.  

Campus Affairs Board: The Secretary of Internal Affairs is the Chair of the ASI Campus Affairs Board. This board will consist of four positions, a student health services liaison, a student athletic association liaison, a environmental & recycling coordinator and a public relations officer who shall assist the Secretary.

The board’s efforts shall include, but shall not be limited to organizational and health/fitness fairs, student’s awareness of campus issues, and student environmental/recycling programs. 

Secretary of Education: The Secretary of Education acts as liaison to, and maintains relations with, the Academic Senate and its standing committees.

The Secretary of Education is authorized to:

1.         Coordinate all student efforts in the academic community

2.         Raise awareness of outreach and retention problems

3.         Strengthen relations with faculty and staff

4.         Provide student leadership and involvement in all education-technology related programs of the ASI

5          Inform the ASI and the campus community of news and pertinent information relating to the technological developments that

Education Enhancement Board: The Secretary of Education is the Chair of the Education Enhancement Board. This board will consist of a technology delegate, a marketing/logistics delegate, a career affiliations delegate and an extended education delegate.  The members of the board shall assist the Secretary in his/her duties.

The board’s efforts shall include, but shall not be limited to career fairs, outreach and retention workshops, student, faculty, and staff socials, student exchange or study abroad programs, service learning programs, or arts and lectures activities. 

Secretary of Programs and Services:.

The Secretary of Programs and Services is authorized to:

1.    Serve as the Chair of the Bronco Events and Activities Team (B.E.A.T.) and works in conjunction with the ASI Associate Director of Recreation, Programs and Marketing in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. 

2.    Oversee all B.E.A.T. meetings and the recruitment, selection, training and retention of chairs and committee members. 

3.     Coordinate all efforts to improve relations with campus organizations by creating and maintaining sponsorships with student organizations, clubs, councils and campus departments.

4.     Meet regularly with the ASI President, Associate Director of RPM, and B.E.A.T. Chairs to ensure programming progress, make final decisions regarding programming and disciplinary actions among B.E.A.T. Chairs, communicate expectations, facilitate conflict resolution, plan brainstorming, programming, and evaluation sessions, maintain records and monitor funds for BEAT finances, sign almost all paperwork, and create a fun working environment for B.E.A.T. 

The Secretary is held accountable by the ASI President and shares these standards with the B.E.A.T. Chairs. 

Bronco Events and Activities Team (BEAT): (See details listed below) The Secretary of Programs and Services is the Chair of the Bronco Events and Activities Team. This board will consist of a set number of members and positions as determined by the ASI Senate. These voting members shall be Assistants to the Secretary.

 

The board’s efforts shall include, but shall not be limited to assisting diversity programs, councils, concerts, films, indoor and outdoor recreation activities. 

ASI EXECUTIVE BOARD

The ASI President appoints each member of the Executive Board and their respective assistants.

Treasurer:

The ASI Treasurer shall be responsible for the monitoring of all ASI funds.  She/he will serve as a fiscal advisor to any ASI organization that requests assistance.  If needed, an assistant shall be appointed to work with the ASI Treasurer.

A.    Function:   The ASI Treasurer shall serve as:

1.     Ex-officio, non-voting member of the Senate

2.     Chair and voting member of the ASI Budget Committee.

3.     Full voting member of the Cabinet

4.     Voting member and Vice Chair of the Rules & Policies Committee

5.     Internal auditor for all ASI budgetary matters.

B.    Authority:   The ASI Treasurer shall be responsible for:

1.     Drafting the ASI Annual Budget and presenting it to the Senate

2.     Presenting the ASI Senate approved budget to the ASI President and thereafter to the University President for approval

3.     Receiving and processing all budget requests

4.     Establishing the duties and goals of the Assistant Treasurer

Attorney General:

If needed, an assistant shall be appointed to work with the ASI Attorney General.

A.    Function: The ASI Attorney General shall serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member and Parliamentarian for all ASI Senate, Cabinet and committee meetings, including but not limited to Finance Board, Facilities and Operations Committee, and the Elections Committee, unless otherwise prescribed by these By-Laws.  The ASI Attorney General shall serve as Chair of the Rules and Policies Committee.

B.     Authority:  The ASI Attorney General shall be empowered to prosecute for ASI all violations of ASI rules, regulations, codes, standard provisions, and By-Laws before the Judiciary.  He/she shall review all By-Law amendments and clubs and organizational charters for the ASI.   The ASI Attorney General shall ensure consistent application of all ASI rules and policies.

ASI JUDICIARY

The ASI President appoints the ASI Chief Justice and the Associate Justices.

ASI Chief Justice: Upon the submission of an official Judicial Complaint Form by a member of the ASI, the ASI Chief Justice with the Associate Justices shall have the authority to review the complaint if it is within the jurisdiction of the Student Court. The ASI Chief Justice with the Associate Justices shall include any action of the Senate or Cabinet, or any office, board, committee, or any other organization under the jurisdiction of the ASI for conformance to any ASI standard procedures, codes, rules, and regulations, as referred to it by any member of the ASI.  The ASI Chief Justice must be impartial and unbiased, and must lead the Student Court into the legal and ethical path.

ASI Associate Justice: (4 Positions) - Upon the submission of an official Judicial Complaint Form by a member of the ASI, the Associate Justices along with the ASI Chief Justice shall have the authority to review the complaint if it is within the jurisdiction of the Student Court. ASI ELECTIONS

ASI Elections Committee Chair: The chair is responsible for working with the elections advisor to ensure all election rules are upheld by overseeing the ASI general election in the spring as well as any special elections held throughout the year.

ASI Elections Committee Members: (at least 4 Positions) The members are responsible for working with the elections chair and advisor to ensure all election rules are upheld while overseeing the ASI general election in the spring as well as any special elections held throughout the year.  In order to remain un-biased, Elections Committee members cannot run for elected position, cannot assist in any campaigning, cannot hold an ASI Student leadership position or hold an executive position on an ASI Governing Body (ASI Council or Sub-council).

BRONCO EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES TEAM (The ASI BEAT)

The ASI Bronco Events and Activities Team (BEAT) sponsors over 100 events every year including: BroncoFusion, The 3D Leadership Conference, U-Rock & Afternoon Blend, Bronco Broadcasting, Session [A], Nite Owl, Pack the Gym, Campus MovieFest, Chalk Festival, service projects, Culture Center heritage months, and more.  The BEAT student leadership consists of the ASI Secretary of Programs & Services and 12 chairs responsible for planning events and recruiting committee members to assist in their responsibilities.

Arts and Lectures (1 position)

The Arts and Lectures Chair creates artistically insightful activities and events for the entire campus.  Past events have included the keynote speaker for the 3D Leadership Conference, a dance workshop, the Chalk Festival, heritage month events, and campus debates.  The Arts and Lectures Chair is encouraged to plan collaborative events with academic departments and the ASI Art Program.  This Chair will learn about performance contracts, hospitality management, public speaking and more.

 

Broadcasting (2 positions)

The Broadcasting Chairs are in charge of Bronco Broadcasting, an internet radio station for the CPP campus.  The purpose of the Bronco Broadcasting is to publicize and promote the BEAT, all ASI events, showcase past successful programs, and provide entertainment for CPP students.  The Broadcasting Chairs are responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing all aspects of Bronco Broadcasting including purchasing equipment, developing a slate of broadcast programming, and researching sources and ideas beneficial to the overall program.  The chairs are directed to operate and guide the program within the standards of ASI to provide programs that correlate to the interests of the campus community. These chairs will learn how to manage schedules for DJs, set time slots for special broadcasting events, all the technology involved with broadcasting equipment, and manage an entire radio station.

 

Concerts (3 positions)

The Concerts Chairs are responsible for planning musical programs on campus that feature a variety of musical tastes and genres. Past programs have included BroncoFusion, the weekly Noon-Hour Concert Series – U-Rock and Afternoon Blend, Session [A], and Strictly Sessions.  These chairs will learn about timeliness, performance contracts, technical support, delegation, co-sponsorships, hospitality, and publicity.  The Concerts Chairs will learn how to organize effectively, develop relationships with performers, agents, and other organizations, as well as manage a committee. 

 

Films (1 position)

The Films Chair is charged with playing entertaining blockbusters, mindful, and cultural films throughout the year.  This committee has traditionally planned a film series with recently released films for students and the campus community, as well as its new annual tradition of Campus MovieFest. Other film programming includes outdoor screenings and collaborative events with campus housing, the Village, campus clubs, and the Culture Centers.  This position will provide valuable experience within the skilled areas of negotiation, time management, and an opportunity to head their own committee. 

Indoor Recreation Chair (1 position)

The Indoor Recreation Chair creates interesting activities within the BSC for student enjoyment. This chair plans events for students to get away from the stress of daily college life. This can include passive events in which students just hang out, more active events like playing games or performances. Events this committee has planned in the past include video games tournaments, billiards

tournaments, comedy shows, Pongs of Fury, and Nite Owl.  This Chair will learn about performance contracts, hospitality, delegation, volunteer recruitment, and creativity. 

Operations Chair (1 position)

The Operations Chair facilitates the office operations of the BEAT.  In working closely with the Secretary of Programs and Services, the Operations Chair monitors the BEAT budget, prepares the weekly meeting agendas and minutes, maintains official programming records, purchases office supplies, and assists in coordinating the vital functions of the office.  This position also has the opportunity to assist other chairs in planning their program logistics.  This Chair will learn about office administration, follow-up, organization, parliamentary procedure, and more.  The Operations Chair has a hand in it all. 

Outdoor Recreation Chair (1 position)

The Outdoor Recreation Chair plans all activities that occur either outside of the Bronco Student Center or off-campus.  Outdoor activities may include the Bronco 5K Run, trips to local sport stadiums, Pack the Gym, and more.  This chair often works closely with Athletics and ASI Campus Recreation.  Communication and follow up with professional staff are skills this chair will acquire in addition to learning how to program with campus entities outside of ASI and in the community. 

Marketing Chair (1 position)

The Marketing Chair is in charge of promoting the BEAT to CPP as the campus programming leader. This chair also assists each BEAT chair with the promotion of their individual events to maintain a consistent and high level of marketing and publicity.  This chair is in charge of knowing all posting policies on campus and can help chairs brainstorm creative ways to publicize their events.  The Marketing Chair must become familiar with staff from Gas Creative Group, University Housing, the University Village, the CLA building, Foundation, OSL, Cultural Centers, and other groups on campus in order to develop relationships that assist in marketing.  This Chair will learn about marketing, advertising, follow-up, delegation, campus policies, and more.

Service and Learning Chair (1 position)

The Service and Learning Chair plans events centered around volunteering and community service opportunities. The chair is responsible for working with local and on-campus organizations to provide a variety of information on issues at the local, national and international level that students should be aware of and volunteering options to students. Past programs include Invisible Children Benefit Concert, Volunteer Fair, Rock The Cause, More Than Words, We've Got Issues Documentary Series and numerous volunteering outreach events with local non-profits. The chair will learn about timeliness, service resources, communication with professional staff, co-sponsorships and more.

BEAT Volunteers

Volunteers are also need to assist every BEAT chair in coordinating, facilitating and executing programs and services during the course of the year.  Students gain access to events, usually behind the scenes and valuable programming experience.

OTHER ASI POSITIONS

ASI Facilities and Operations Committee: (3 Positions) Students shall sit on the Facilities and Operations Committee and meet at least once every two weeks or on an as needed basis.  He/she shall represent the student body on issues that pertain to the Bronco Student Center and must make decisions based on the betterment of the student body and not on personal sentiments.

OSL Heritage Month Chairs

Each of these programs is implemented with the assistance of a Cultural Center Coordinator and a student committee.  The committee appoints a student to serve as chairperson.  The chairperson works directly with their advisor to prepare a budget, recruit and work with the committee members, plan programs, and implement a majority of them in a particular month.  Additional programs are also hosted throughout the year to remind us that each culture should be recognized throughout the year, not only during one month. 

University-wide Committees – Student Representatives

ASI appoints student representatives to sit on the many University-wide Committees, including, but not limited to, the following; Academic Senate, Architectural, Landscape, Parking & Traffic, Pubic Safety, Athletic, Finance, Fee Advisory, Enrollment Management, IT Governance, Advising and Search Committees.

Representatives to the CPP Foundation, Inc. Board: ASI appoints a representative to the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors for a 2 year term. The Foundation is an auxiliary that oversees and manages on-campus food service, vending, the University Village Apartments and the Bookstores.
