1.
How much does it cost to use the Book Exchange?
The Book Exchange is absolutely FREE of charge.
2.
Who runs the Book Exchange?
The
Book Exchange is run by ASI Marketing.
3.
What is an ISBN?
An
ISBN is an International Standard Book Number. Every book sold anywhere
in the world should have a unique ISBN, meaning that you can find any
book in the world simply with that one number, which never duplicates.
In our example below, the ISBN is 0-7645-0624-2. When filling out our
forms, you should leave out the dashes!
ISBNs
are assigned
by R.R. Bowker in the United States and by a variety
of agencies worldwide. Publishers apply to these agencies to get a range
of numbers with a unique prefix which varies in length. Because of mergers
and acquisitions, some publishers have several, or even dozens of prefixes.
Every
ISBN should be unique. Occasionally, ISBNs are reused for books
that have long been out of print, but this practice is generally discouraged.
ISBNs
are always 10 characters long. They can be found on the the back of
most books, next to the UPC bar-code.
The
ISBN can also be found within the first few pages of the book, where
all other publishing information can be found.
4.
Why should I sell my used textbooks using the Book
Exchange instead of selling them to the other book stores? If you're here using the Book Exchange, I'd bet you've had to sell
your used textbooks to bookstores, at a price far less than what you
paid for it. Quite often, we pay $60-80 for a used book, only to sell
it back to the same place for only $30-40, knowing the whole time, that
they'll sell it again at $60-80.
They
make a profit off of us time and time again!
The
ASI Book Exchange DOES NOT make a penny off of any books you
sell.
Why
not? We're not here to make money. We're here for you!
5.
How do I know if a textbook will be used next quarter?
The best thing to do is to ask your instructor which book he or she
will be using in the following quarter. Be sure to ask for the specific
edition number, and ISBN
if it is available.
6.
How do I know if "this" is the right book
for "this" class?
It is your responsibility to find out what books are being used in the
classes you are taking. Again, the best thing to do is to ask your instructor
which book he or she will be using. Be sure to ask for the specific
edition number, and ISBN
if it is available. Usually, this information can also be found in your
instructor's syllabus. You can also check at the Bookstore to see what
books are beings used.
7.
How do I contact the Book Exchange?
The best way to contact us is via email. Our address is bookexchange@csupomona.edu.
All of our contact information can be found on our "About Us"
page.
8.
How do I find the books I'm looking for?
We've made the process of looking for used books as simple as possible,
and we've tried to give you as many options as we could.
The first part
of finding books, is knowing which books to look for. For that, you
can ask your instructors, you can look it up in the syllabus, or you
can check in with the bookstores, to see which books they have listed
for each class.
Then just use the
"Book Search Form" to search through our book database. You
can get there by clicking on the "Buying Books" tab on the Main Menu.
9.
How do I fill out the "Book Search Form"?
If you ever have any questions about how to use the "Book Search
Form," just go to the "How
to Buy Books?"
page. You can get there by clicking on any of the "Need more
info?"
lines, or by clicking on the "How to Buy Books" link from the sub-menu:
10.
What if I buy a used book using the Book Exchange,
but later drop the class, or if I find the book cheaper somewhere else,
what can I do?
Unfortunately, should this happen, there is no way to "return"
the book to the seller or to the Book Exchange.
If
you do find yourself in this situation, I would suggest that you use
the Book Exchange to sell it and get your money back.
11.
How do I contact the seller?
Once you've found the book your looking for in our database, just click
on the User Name of the seller,
and a page will open up that should have the seller's name, email address,
home phone number, cell phone number, and/or pager number.
12.
What do I do if I can't get in contact with the seller?
If you've repeatedly tried to make contact with the seller, we suggest
that you make sure you've been using the correct contact information,
and make one last attempt to contact the seller. If you still can't
contact the seller, I'd assume that the seller has already sold the
book. You may want to consider repeating the search.
We've also made it easier to Email the seller. Simply click on the "Email the Seller" button from Seller's Contact page, or go there directly by clicking on the "Email" icon ( )from the "Search Results" page.
-- OR --
13.
What if the seller's price is too high?
As a buyer, you have every right to ask the seller if they'd accept
a lower amount. If not, you can always look elsewhere.
14.
How should I go about making arrangements to purchase
a book?
The main concern here is your safety!
Never
agree to meet with someone you don't know in a nonpublic place.
DO
NOT go to their homes!
DO
NOT go to their places of work!
Find
a public place that you can both agree on, such as the University Union.
In
consideration of your safety, ASI will arrange "Book Exchange
Forums" at least once per quarter, to provide a safe atmosphere
to facilitate your "book exchanges."
15.
What if I can't find the book I'm looking for?
You can always keep trying our database periodically, to see if anyone
has recently posted an ad for that book.
We can also create a "Want Ad" which will allow you to post ads expressing your need
for a particular book, which would hopefully help you get connected
with someone who has the book and is willing to sell it.
To get to the "Want Ad" section, click on the "Want Ad" tab from the Main Menu:
16.
How do I fill out the "Seller Form"?
If you ever

you run a search for that book, you may need to "refresh"
or "reload" the page.
18.
How long will my ad stay on the Book Exchange?
Your ad can stay on the Book Exchange for up to one (1) quarter.
In order to insure
that all ads are current and accurate, we will remove all remaining
ads during the third week of each quarter.
If you are unable
to sell your book by our deadline of the fourth week, you can always
submit another ad in the following weeks.
But with any luck,
you should be able to sell your book sooner. At which point, we ask
that you remove the ad yourself.

trying to contact you.

new account!
We've made it easy
to get a password reminder!
At the "Sign
in" screen just follow the "Forgot your password?"
link, and follow the simple instructions.
25.
How much should I sell my used textbook for?
It's entirely up to you. As a rule of thumb, you should definitely sell
it for less than it's original price, but the rest is up to you. You
can be as greedy or as generous as you want, preferably the latter.
But keep in mind,
that if you ask for too much, you may not get any "takers!"
26.
