Our History

asi 1938- The first year the campus is open for enrollment (then called the Cal Poly Voorhis Unit), the first governing body, Student Activities Committee (SAC), is formed and headed by Avon Carlson.

1939- SAC is renamed Student Affairs Council.
1955- Associated Students (AS) was established to legislate and administer all business regarding the student
body.

1957- Associated Student Body (ASB) 1958- Inter-Club Council- Part of Associated Student Body is created to handle the many social clubs and activities that began to emerge.
1964 1963- Associated Students Incorporated is established with a structure similar to that of ASI today.

1964- Council of Organizational Representatives (COR) is formed

1967 –Three years after Associated Students Inc. was established, and as a campus made up of only 4,500 students staff and faculty, a committee was formed to put thoughts of a central meeting spot on campus into plans.
1970 – On December 3 the College Union Proposal, a 27 page document, outlined the future of the college union and a college bookstore. The future union was to have a games room, library, art gallery, TV lounge, music room, multipurpose rooms, ticket sales, crafts room, food venues and more- much of what the Bronco Student Center currently has today.

1974 – On October 21, with 12,000 enrolled students, the University Union was opened. The Student Union, as it was called at the time, housed such services as an ice cream parlor, a beer bar, arts and crafts area, theater and meeting rooms. Today the former University Union is now the establishment of many ASI offices including Business Services, Gas Creative Group, ASI Student Government and Games Room Etc.
1991 1991 – April 22 – 25, 1991, students went to the polls to vote on increasing fees by $10 to expand the Union that students were growing out of. This expansion would include services that students requested such as a post office, study rooms and fast food. The possible expansion was denied by only 35 student votes.
1996 – In February 1996, after many attempts, students voted to increase fees for the expansion of their current University Union.
1997 – Phase I of the$18.5 dollar University Union expansion finally began in February of 1997. At the same time design for Phase II of the expansion was finalized.
1998 – Phase I of the expansion was completed in just under a year which included renovation of the already standing University Union.
2000 2000 – Groundbreaking for Phase II began in May 2000. This part of the expansion included a new addition to the University Union which would increase the building space from 77,000 to 122,000 square feet.
2003 – In April 2003 the former University Union was officially renamed the Bronco Student Center. The doors to the BSC were opened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by ASI President Uwaifo Obanor and University President Bob Suzuki.
2003 – In October 2003 the Bronco Student Center opened its doors to everyone on campus. The newly added facilities that students use today are the Bronco Fitness Center, Recreational Sports office, Center Court, Conference and Events office and service desk and many new meeting rooms.

What We Do
Associated Students Inc. (ASI) is more than just student government. We're a non-profit corporation serving students on many levels. There are many ways that ASI impacts your life as a student. For example, even if you're not directly involved with ASI you can still take advantage of the services it provides when you visit the Bronco Student Center (BSC), which is owned and operated by none other than ASI. These services include Center Court, Games Room Etc., Gas Creative Group, Recreational Sports, the Bronco Fitness Center, the Children's Center and much more. Other ASI programs are the Bronco Events and Activities Team, better know as B.E.A.T., which put on a variety of events throughout the year. Let's not forget ASI Student Government where you can become directly involved with students representation on campus. ASI provides student representation at the campus level and at the California State University system-wide level. It also offers leadership development through student government, student-led programming, student employment and student involvement in a wide array of BSC programs and services. We fully support the enrichment of student life by providing annual funding for student clubs and organizations, diversity programs, athletic scholarships and academic support programs.

How We Do It
We are able to operate in the way that we do based on our motto “students serving students.” At Associated Students Incorporated, we are made up of student leaders, student staff and non-student staff. A majority of ASI programs and services are run by students and guided by professional staff. We fully believe that our learning-centered environment enables students to get the hands-on learning that they would not always learn in the classroom that will prepare them for their future.

What are ASI fees?

You're probably wondering where your Associated Students Inc. (ASI) and Student Union (Bronco Student Center) fees go every quarter. Rest assured, we're not just a line item on your tuition statement; we're a group of professional and student staff that work diligently to serve you. All students enrolled at Cal Poly Pomona automatically become eligible for all services and programs provided by ASI because of the student fees you pay.

Feel confident that your money is invested wisely into programs and services for no one else but you. Every year, ASI goes to great lengths to provide only the best educational programs and services to the students of Cal Poly Pomona.

You can see many of these services when you walk into the BSC, the home of ASI and central meeting place for many of the happenings on campus. The BSC was recently renovated in 2003 in an effort to provide you with more high-quality, innovative programs and services. These programs include services such as the Bronco Fitness Center, where you can drop in to get a work-out between classes or work. Other ASI programs include Recreational Sports, Bronco Events and Activities Team (B.E.A.T.) and the Cal Poly Pomona Children's Center.

So next time you're bored out of your mind you can head to Games Room Etc. and play a round of pool or video games. Or if you're famished you can grab a bite to eat at Center Court in the BSC where you can find Subway, Kikka, Round Table Pizza, Pony Express and vending machines with an assortment of goodies.

As you can see, ASI invests not only your money into making this campus a better place for all of us, but a lot of time and effort as well.
